About Us
The Government of West Bengal restructured the former West Bengal State Electricity Board (WBSEB) into two distinct entities: the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) and the West Bengal State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (WBSETCL).
Core Functions and Responsibilities
WBSEDCL primarily focuses on the distribution and hydro generation of electricity. It serves as the nodal agency for the Government of West Bengal, spearheading rural electrification initiatives aimed at ensuring electricity access for all rural households in alignment with the National Rural Electrification Policy.
The company is governed by a Board consisting of twelve members, which includes seven Executive Directors (among them the Chairman and Managing Director), one Woman Director, and four Independent Directors.
Evolution and Growth
Over the years, WBSEDCL has transformed into a leading power utility service organization in India. In response to the evolving market dynamics and the rising demand for electricity following the global slowdown, WBSEDCL is dedicated to enhancing service quality for its 2.03 crore customers throughout West Bengal. This is achieved through its comprehensive network, which includes 5 Zones, 20 Regional Offices, 76 Distribution Divisions, and 534 Customer Care Centers.
The company has transitioned from merely providing engineering solutions to tackling complex customer challenges with innovative approaches. WBSEDCL has implemented Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems using SAP across various functions, including Financial Accounting & Control, Material Management, HR with Payroll, Plant Maintenance, and Project Systems.
Major Projects
Following the successful implementation of the Purulia Pumped Storage Project (900 MW hydel power) during the 10th Plan period, WBSEDCL is now advancing the ambitious Turga Pumped Storage Project, which aims for a capacity of 4 x 250 MW in the 13th Plan period.
To further enhance service efficiency and address intricate customer challenges, WBSEDCL has initiated the Integrated Power Development Scheme. This program focuses on strengthening sub-transmission and distribution networks, along with the distribution of meters and transformers in urban areas. Additionally, the Sech Bandhu Scheme is dedicated to improving rural electricity systems.
Commitment to Innovation
WBSEDCL is committed to innovation through IT-enabled systems across its operations, striving to achieve greater engineering predictability. The company aims to position itself as the leading utility in India concerning customer service, operational efficiency, and financial viability.
